What Sarah Palin says is not news. The last losing vice-presidential candidate of a major party in a presidential election, John Edwards, began campaigning for the 2008 Democratic nomination almost immediately after the loss in 2004, and receives more mentions in the press today for his extramarital affairs than he did at the time as someone presenting an alternative to Bush administration policies. The number of media organizations treating Palin’s disagreement with President Obama’s new nuclear policy as major news is astounding. She has no power, in fact she quit the elected position that she did hold, yet was presented in the media this week as someone who is on equal footing with Obama. She is not. If newspapers are interested in getting readers back, they need practice the craft of journalism again, especially in cases where national security is at issue.
